As you walk up and down the docks at a marina, you see boats topside. You see the decks, the hull and the rigging. But, have you ever wondered what these boats are like down below? You first impression is that the space is small, and that impression is usually accurate. But what really goes on down below? What kind of life-style do people enjoy as they live aboard?

This page is dedicated to giving you a glimpse into living on a yacht. You are invited to share your experiences, comments and questions. Let the world get a glimpse of what your day-to-day life is like. What are some of the challenges and what are some of the solutions? How do you cook, sleep, entertain, bathe, and so on? How does weather impact on living aboard?
Let me share some ways we manage our galley, the boat's kitchen. Here is our youngest, daughter, Amparo. While on board as a recent guest, she decided to treat us to pockets, a delectable delight. Note there are some cooking items on the ship's ladder. With counter space limited, the ladder becomes a handy place to place extra items. The stairs can be covered with non-skid rubberized mats when in use. Scupper, our resident dog, is enjoying the aromas, but must patiently wait to come down below.

In order to contrast two very different galleys, I have pictured below the tiny galley in our 27' Catalina. Everything is lined up. To the far left is a 34" refrigerator. It was a luxury for this size boat. The boat came with an icebox (to the left of the sink), but we decided to forego its use. Under the cutting board is a two burner alcohol stove. We preferred to use a two-burner hot plate as an alcohol stove tends to give off moisture. A lot of surperb meals were cooked in this galley. After we moved to our larger boat we put Joy up for sale. This picture was taken for marketing purposes.
Next contrast this galley with the larger one on our 32' Catalina. Double sinks and a two burner propane stove with an oven make a vast difference. We even have a small microwave. Aside from size, the major difference is our refrigerator. The galley on our Catalina 320 has a traditional box which took a little bit of getting use to. So we don't use it to keep icecream frozen, but other than than its freezer is fine for meat and fish. There's a tiny freezer which wouldn't hold all the prepared frozen food that lots of families eat. But we have adjusted.
